14 November 2023 - Impact Research, Berlin, Germany
In a webinar titled "Structured Chaos: How Non-Profits in Conflict Settings Became an Economic Sector," hosted by IMPACT Research on November 14, 2023, leading experts and researchers gathered to discuss the findings of the research “Economics of non-profits”, delving into the intricate dynamics of not-for-profit organizations (NFPs) operating in conflict zones, with a specific focus on Syria post-2011.
The webinar featured insights from renowned figures like Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj (partner at LUGARIT), Dr. Joseph Daher, Mouayad AlBonni, Zaki Mehchi, Dr. Dina Melhem, and Wolfgang Gressmann, with Rafif Jouejati moderating the event.
The research unveiled at the event provides a comprehensive analysis of the economic role of NFPs in conflict settings, revealing the substantial impact these organizations have had beyond their immediate humanitarian objectives. The collection of papers explores various dimensions, including the macro and micro-economic implications of international aid, the socio-economic role of NFPs, and their long-term effects on the regions they serve.
Dr. Joseph Daher's paper, "A Macro Perspective on International Aid Industry in Syria and its Economic and Political Impacts," offered a critical overview of the Syrian economy pre-2011 and traced the evolution of the country's civil society and non-profit sector. His analysis highlighted the complexities of funding sources and underscored the pressing need for a shift towards early recovery and development funds to revitalize the Syrian economy.
The second paper, "The Role and Dynamics of Non-profit Sector in Syria," co-authored by Zaki Mehchi and Mouayad AlBonni, provided a micro-level examination of six Syrian locations. This paper shed light on the non-profit sector's activities and their socioeconomic impacts, focusing on key areas like health, education, and social cohesion. It also explored the challenges faced by these organizations, including issues of corruption, favoritism, and the influence of various security and military actors.
Dr. Daher's third paper, examining the long-term impact and economic imprint of the non-profit sector in Syria, critiqued the aid industry's current modality. It emphasized the need for innovative and practical strategies to integrate civil society more effectively in economic recovery and sustainable development.
This webinar marks a step in understanding the complexities and potential of NFPs in conflict zones. It highlights the urgent need for a strategic shift in international aid, focusing on long-term economic recovery and sustainable development to address the profound challenges faced in such settings.
