16-17 December 2023 - Brussels, Belgium
In a move to address the escalating issue of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in Syria, the International Conference on Combating Violence Against Women and Girls in Syria was held in Brussels, Belgium, on 16-17 December 2023. The event was organized by the EuroMed Feminist Initiative, renowned for its commitment to gender equality and women’s rights as crucial elements of democracy building.
Funded by the Swedish International Development Agency (SIDA), the conference aligned with the ongoing program "Supporting Political Transition in Syria through Gender Sensitive Social Reconstruction." This initiative highlights a growing recognition of the need for gender perspectives in peacebuilding and reconstruction efforts.
The conference aimed to explore strategies for combating VAWG in Syria, focusing on establishing a comprehensive legal framework to address this pervasive issue. The gathering provided a vital platform for sharing experiences, insights, and expertise. It emphasized the importance of women’s participation in Syria’s early recovery process, reinforcing the connection between gender equality and sustainable peace.
Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj, a Partner at LUGARIT, participated in the event and facilitated a critical session on identifying stakeholders. His expertise significantly advanced the discourse on combating violence against women and promoting their participation in all processes in Syria.
Syria’s context for VAWG is deeply rooted in patriarchal values, reflected in customs, traditions, and laws, predominantly influenced by religious authorities. The conflict in Syria has exacerbated these issues, with women facing increased risks of violence, including sexual violence by various militias and authorities. The Syrian legal system, marred by discrimination, offers inadequate protection against such violence, with some laws even perpetuating gender discrimination.
The conference’s discussions underscored the urgency of addressing these challenges. Participants called for a holistic approach, encompassing legal reforms, educational initiatives, and economic empowerment to combat VAWG effectively. The event marked a significant step forward in the global effort to support Syrian women and girls, advocating for their rights and participation in shaping a peaceful and equitable future for their country.
