Arab Forum for Sustainable Development 2018

24-26 April 2018  -  Beirut, Lebanon

The United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Western Asia (ESCWA) hosted the 2018 Arab Forum for Sustainable Development in Beirut, Lebanon, from April 24 to 26. Themed “Natural Resources, Future Generations and the Common Good,” this high-level regional platform brought together a diverse array of stakeholders to discuss the implementation and progress of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the Arab region.

The Forum, in its third year, opened with a segment dedicated to national experiences. Delegates shared insights and lessons from their countries' responses to the 2030 Agenda, focusing on policy integration, developing measurement systems, engaging multiple stakeholders, and examining means of implementation. This segment provided a crucial overview of the region's status in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

A highlight of the Forum was the second segment, which aligned with the broader theme of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) 2018, "Transformation towards Sustainable and Resilient Societies." This session emphasized regional perspectives on SDGs 6, 7, 11, 12, 15, and 17 - the goals under review at HLPF 2018.

Panel discussions centered on the need for transformative changes in development planning and policymaking to ensure the sustainable management of natural resources, equitable benefit distribution, and preservation for future generations.

A contribution came from Omar Abdulaziz Hallaj in Plenary session 5, titled “Planning for Resilient, Inclusive and Sustainable Cities.” The session delved into the interplay between sustainable development and urban planning, touching upon security, public health, social integration, and governmental coordination at various levels. Special attention was given to the challenges of rebuilding war-torn cities and promoting inclusive development. The experience of Oman in enhancing local city governance was discussed, highlighting their success in improving health and living standards.  The session concluded with a resounding agreement on the need for legislative and regulatory reviews to foster citizen participation in sustainable urban development, underscoring the notion that what benefits the planet ultimately benefits its people.
